Man, Woman Nabbed For String Of Armed Robberies At Long Island Gas Stations

A man and woman are facing a host of charges following a string of armed robberies at Suffolk County gas stations over the past two months, police said.

Copiague resident Juan Carlos Fernandez Espinal is being charged with eight robberies, with West Babylon resident Marta Rafalko allegedly being involved in four of them. Both were arrested int he parking lot of Ultra Gas Station on West Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Robberies were reported at: 

  • USA Gasoline, 188 N Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, on Oct. 2 at 9:55 p.m.;
  • BP, 1235 Route 231, North Babylon, on Oct. 5 at 12:10 a.m.;
  • Shell, 958 Montauk Highway, West Islip, on Oct. 5 at 2:25 a.m.;
  • Valero, 355 Bay Shore Road, Deer Park, on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.;
  • USA Gasoline, 188 N Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst, on Oct. 28 at 7:37 p.m.;
  • Exxon, 570 Sunrise Highway, West Islip, on Oct. 28 at 11:30 p.m.;
  • Gulf, 86 Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst, on Nov. 1 at 11:15 a.m.;
  • Ok Petroleum, 569 Route 109, West Babylon, on Nov. 6 at 12:53 p.m.

Fernandez Espinal, 18, was charged with eight counts of first-degree robbery. Rafalko, 20, was charged with four counts of first-degree robbery. Both were held overnight and are scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, Nov. 7.
